Course Overview
Designed for students passionate about theater, film, and television, this program offers comprehensive training in acting, vocal performance, and stage movement. Acting spans Shakespeare to on-camera technique; Musical Theater embraces the Golden Era through contemporary Broadway; and Vocal Performance emphasizes a healthy technique to achieve one’s full potential in any style. Develop the confidence, creativity, and technical skills needed for success in the performing arts.
Audition Requirements
Acting Pathway: Auditioners must prepare and perform two one-minute contrasting contemporary monologues from memory. A short interview will follow.
Musical Theater and Vocal Performance Pathways: Auditioners must prepare and perform two contrasting songs from memory with live piano accompaniment. Songs should showcase vocal/instrument range, technical skill, and expressiveness. A professional pianist will be provided; applicants must bring clearly marked sheet music in the appropriate key.
Course Description
ACTING CLASSES
Coursework for students in the Acting Pathway is designed to develop acting skills and techniques which will allow students to channel their creative impulses, raise levels of imagination, and expand emotional, vocal and physical range. Students will evolve a work ethic that is rooted in honesty, commitment, collaboration, and valuing the creative process. Curriculum will include courses such as Acting Techniques, Voice and Movement, Improvisation, Shakespeare and the Classics, On Camera Acting, and Playreading, with additional training or workshops in areas such as Auditioning, Stage Makeup, Stage Combat and Devised Theater. Acting Techniques classes culminate in an end of year performance project.
MUSICAL THEATER CLASSES
Introduction to Ear Training and Sight Reading
Designed to build core musicianship skills, this course introduces students to interval recognition, rhythmic accuracy, and melodic dictation. Sight-reading exercises will enhance students’ ability to perform unfamiliar music confidently. Through engaging activities, young musicians will strengthen their auditory skills and deepen their understanding of musical structures.
VOCAL PERFORMANCE CLASSES
Vocal Health & Technique Class
This class equips young singers with the foundational skills to maintain vocal health and develop proper technique in multiple styles. Students will learn effective warm-ups, breath exercises, and posture to ensure safe and sustainable singing practices. Topics also include managing vocal strain and developing a resonant, well-supported tone.
International Phonetic Alphabet Fluency and Application
Students will gain proficiency in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to accurately pronounce and interpret lyrics in multiple languages. This course focuses on understanding vowel and consonant articulation for clear diction in classical, operatic, and musical theater repertoires, as well as acting in different dialects and accents. Practical exercises will enhance students’ confidence in applying IPA to their repertoire.
Vocal Ensemble
This ensemble offers young singers the opportunity to collaborate in a dynamic choral setting, focusing on repertoire spanning classical, contemporary, and world music. Students will refine their ensemble skills, including tone, harmonizing confidently, and musical interpretation. Performances will highlight teamwork and artistry while fostering a sense of community among participants.
Performance Opportunities
Audition-based pre-professional and professional performance opportunities include school productions and other performance projects, which will rehearse and perform after school hours.
