Course Overview
This dynamic academic program centers on intensive English, Spanish, and Mandarin immersion, intertwining linguistic proficiency with cultural exploration and global perspectives. Students cultivate practical language skills while developing a deep understanding of international arts and cultures, expressing their insights through creative writing pieces. The curriculum integrates creativity, public speaking, intercultural communication, and collaborative projects to foster global acumen, with narrative and poetic elements woven throughout. This multifaceted approach results in a comprehensive portfolio spanning three languages, equipping students with versatile skills needed to thrive in an interconnected world. The program’s fusion of linguistic mastery, cultural fluency, and global awareness, enhanced by the power of creative expression, prepares graduates to navigate and contribute meaningfully to the international landscape of arts, culture, and commerce. Through storytelling and creative writing across languages, students develop a unique voice to articulate their global experiences and perspectives.
Audition Requirements
*Current RSI students do not need to audition for this pathway.
New students must submit the items listed below to showcase their language proficiency. If students wish to study both Spanish and Chinese language, submissions in both languages (recorded and written) are required. If a student does not have a foundation in Spanish or Chinese, but wishes to begin their language study, then their submissions should be English.
- A recorded video response (2-3 minutes) in English, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese, demonstrating speaking proficiency. Select one prompt to address:
(1) Choose a holiday or tradition from an English, Spanish or Chinese-speaking country and describe its cultural significance and how it is celebrated,
(2) Describe a typical day in your life, including what you do in the morning, activities at school or work, and evening plans,
(3) Share your favorite book or movie. Describe its plot, characters, and why you like it. - A typed written response (300-500 words) in English, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese, demonstrating writing proficiency. Select one prompt to address:
(1) What excites you about learning Spanish or Mandarin Chinese?
(2) Share a personal experience or observation that made you appreciate the importance of learning Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.
(3) Share your personal goals and future aspirations for learning Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.
Following the submission of these items, applicants will participate in a short interview to discuss their interests in International Studies & World Arts and Culture, as well as your goals for future education in this field.
Performance Opportunities
Service/Performance Opportunities for International Languages Studies and Enterprises Pathway include:
- Community service projects in Spanish and Chinese-speaking communities, fostering cultural understanding and language skills.
- Leadership development through participation in Chinese and Spanish public speaking and writing competitions, honing language proficiency and presentation abilities.
- Cultural performances showcasing Chinese and Spanish language skills through music and theater.
- Organizing and participating in a Cultural Fair, where students can share their knowledge of international arts and traditions with the school community.
