Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly
One way RSI’s Summer Camp develops well-rounded children is through Sports Camp. For an hour each day, students step outside to take a break from in-class activities with organized outdoor playtime. Activities vary from baseball to soccer, basketball, and hula hoop competitions. Sports Camp has been fun for our students as they are not just exercising their bodies; they are strengthening their mental health and developmental skills as well.
Each week students play different sports and experiment with new techniques. Some friends stand by their peers and coach them on the perfect baseball stance. Other students exchange advice on the best ways to hula hoop so they can keep the hoop up longer. Sports Camp gives our students opportunities to have some friendly competition in a nonthreatening environment so they can practice good sportsmanship. By learning to lose in with a good attitude, they are more excited to reflect on ways they can do better next time; they also practice celebrating each other’s wins and accomplishments. Aside from having fun, following rules and learning teamwork are just a few advantages for the students who participate in Sports Camp.
