Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly

RSI provides leadership opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. One of our C9 leadership initiatives is to have students collaborate and work together to come up with a class mascot based on their class values. First, students decide what is most important to their character and what is important to them as a class. Students take time to review mascots they think best characterize their class motto and class values.

Why is a class mascot important to our students? Having the students come up with their own mascot helps them develop their class identity and build class pride. It unites our students under positive characteristics that they want to be remembered by and creates a strong sense of unity and connectedness through a shared sense of responsibility.

Here are a couple of highlights of class mascots from the past:

“Like the fox, the C9 class is wise, bold, wild, courageous, and helpful.”
“The sea turtle is resilient, tough, kind, and wise.”
“Our class is like a Manta Ray: unique, fast, strong, intelligent, and awesome!”
“We are the Eagles because we are brave, strong, wise, and we fly high.”
