Outside the Box – Ashley Bleeker

RSI Elementary students enjoyed the challenge of creating their own board game inspired by topics from their science class. This assignment was designed to utilize their creativity while engaging students in a review of the content they have been learning throughout the school year. Students worked in groups of 3-4 to collaborate on a concept and then execute their vision together. Part of the challenge of this assignment was that students needed to include rules of gameplay, a game board, pieces that moved along the path, and elements from their science coursework. Students then delegated the tasks to complete the project, working together.

Students’ creativity and ingenuity were incredibly evident. One group created a lily pad game board inspired by the life cycle of frogs learned in their biology class. Another group of students created their game by utilizing the periodic table as their game board, with cards instructing them to move from one element to another.

Not only did this project utilize and inspire their creativity, but it also revealed their mastery of topics learned. Their critical thinking was strengthened as they solved problems related to the written instructions and how to communicate the functions of the game. Through learning to utilize academic learning, creativity, and problem-solving skills, and students become well-rounded individuals. These unique assignments engage students in the academic process and encourage them to take ownership of their learning. Ultimately, it keeps their science class fun!
