Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly

On the last Friday of January, RSI PTO hosted our annual Chinese New Year Celebration online. Students and families came together and joined in on a night of fun, sharing in traditions and laughter.

Each family who attended the event received a gift bag full of traditional Chinese New Year items. During the event, kids dug through their goody bags and talked about the meaning behind each item. The chosen snacks prepared each year symbolize happiness, prosperity, and longevity. Rice crackers for wealth and prosperity, oranges representing wealth and togetherness, dried fruit and candy symbolizing a sweet life and abundance were just a few of the many snacks found in the goody bags. Other items found in the bag were rattle drums, red envelopes, and good fortunes. Chinese rattle drums are traditional Chinese toys used in ritual music during celebrations, and the bright red envelopes symbolize good luck and prosperity.

A big highlight of the night was magician Tricky Tim! He entertained families and children with his sleight of hand and quick-witted jokes. His interactive virtual magic show kept children engaged and laughing throughout the show. The night ended with a special presentation from RSI Director, Mrs. Mizera, who closed the event by teaching the students a couple of popular Chinese New Year songs: : Happy New Year 新年好!Congrats!  Congrats! 恭喜!恭喜!

Thank you to RSI’s PTO for coordinating a night of tradition and togetherness.

新年快乐
