Outside the Box – Ashley Bleeker
At RSI, we celebrate the three languages spoken at RSI through in-class cultural activities! These are times where students can engage with the backdrop for each language and gain a rich understanding of each one. For Lunar New Year, students enjoyed a special time during their Chinese class.
Here is an excerpt from one of the RSI Chinese Teachers, Xiong Loashi, on this significant holiday:
“Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China and is also widely celebrated in South Korea, and Vietnam, among other countries. In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the year of the rabbit.”
“RSI students celebrated this festival by wearing traditional Chinese clothes, and tasting regional cuisine, for example, dumplings, fried rice, and noodles. In each classroom, teachers prepared red envelopes for every student and celebrated the festival with various crafts, songs, and stories.”
As a community, these celebrations bring a unique fun and joy to the learning process. Students will also look forward to the other in-class activities themed around other significant holidays for both English and Spanish!
