Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly

Last week, RSI High School students met with their High School and Community College counselor for the first time. It was an exciting day as they talked about their goals for this year and their goals and hopes. Looking towards the future, RSI high school students are in the beginning stages of paving the way to reach their future goals. With their counselor, Ms. Gonzales, they started the year off by discussing their short-term and long-term goals, knowing that they can always pivot and adjust their goals the more they explore their interests. Students discussed their end goals, like their dream career, so they can focus on what colleges they want to go to that will help them prepare for that career or industry. With those aspirations in mind, students can begin setting up SMART goals in high school. Some aspirations mentioned in class were to be aerospace engineers, writers and authors, and work in animation. Over the next couple of years, students will take a deep dive into strategies and programs to help them learn more about their interests.

Working with a high school counselor will benefit our high school students in many ways. They will work together to tackle organizational techniques. They will learn how to manage their time as they balance extracurriculars and advanced academics. They will find ways that will set them apart from other college applicants along the way. Students will work on building their academic portfolios, and in the process of doing so, they will be able to learn more about themselves. By knowing it is okay to adapt and change their interests, students will feel more confident in who they are and who they will become.

RSI High School students are on track to complete 2 years of Community College and complete their IGETC requirements. We are looking forward to exploring a new year of growth and opportunities with our High School students!
