Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly
Summer camp was short but sweet. RSI students and staff had a fun time traveling to different countries every week where they learned about other cultures and traditions. The last country our campers learned about was the USA and the 8th wonder of the world – RSIOC! Students pieced together a puzzle of the RSI logo, they learned about different places like New York City and talked about their home state of California. Chinese and Spanish lessons covered numbers and shapes, along with fun American-style crafts. On the last day of camp, students created passports and decorated pages with stamps of all the places they learned about over summer. Our online classes made the most out of our last week of camp! They reinvented the RSI logo, drew school mascots, sang songs, and danced. In Chinese and Spanish language classes, students worked together on grammar and writing worksheets and discussed why they love RSI.
Throughout our time on-campus, RSI staff did a wonderful job adapting to a new format of socially distant teaching which included setting up individual work and play stations for campers, teaching lessons outside of the classroom, and creating different areas for students to play when they were outside. Hula hoops and colorful circles were used to promote social distancing during outdoor activities which gave students a playful area to stand or sit in. Students took turns hitting a pinata when they were in Mexico, they jumped around in colorful powder during our week in India, and they ran around and flew kites during their week in the US. Thank you to all the staff who helped make this a memorable summer for our students as they discovered the wonders of the world!
