Happy Chinese New Year from RSI!

Outside the Box – Christy Johnson

恭喜发财! February 5th officially kicked off the new year on the lunar calendar. The Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival is the most important of all of the Chinese holidays and celebrations can last up to two weeks! Chinese New Year officially begins on February 5th, 2019, and ends on February 19th. 2019 is the Year of the Pig! Renascence School International students celebrated this very special holiday during their Chinese language classes on Tuesday, February 5th. Their teachers planned many fun activities including Chinese calligraphy, crafts, songs, games, stories, and a dumpling making demonstration!

Interesting Chinese New Year fact: Aproximately 20% of the world celebrates this special holiday. In the Chinese culture the family reunion is most important, and everyone has to be home for New Years Eve dinner. This Spring Migration is called chunyun (春运) causing the largest human migration in the world on this day!

Thank you to the RSI PTO for preparing a spread of delicious traditional Chinese holiday foods including dumplings, mandarin oranges, traditional sweet treats, and more! Some RSI students came to school dressed in traditional Chinese attire. Both students and staff really enjoyed this very special day! Happy New Year from all of us at RSI!
