Chemical bonds and Playdoh? Yes, you heard that right!

Outside the Box – Christy Johnson

Each week, Renascence School International students experiment with a new subject in their science class. This week our C8 (3rd grade) students worked on different activities that helped them visualize and learn more about molecules and chemical bonds.

Through a fun, hands-on experiment the students learned about the bonding rules of molecules. They recreated complicated molecules with Playdoh and toothpicks. Different colors and shapes of Playdoh represented different molecules and atoms, and each toothpick represented one chemical bond. The students used their knowledge of molecules and atoms to recreate complicated soft molecules like ammonia and methane. By adding more atoms they were learning which results created positive and negative ions.
