Outside the Box – Nicole Kelly

One way RSI teachers foster cultural appreciation in the classroom is by celebrating International Holidays. In Chinese language classes, students learned about the traditions and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also referred to as the Moon Festival. In Chinese tradition, the full moon symbolizes prosperity and harmony, and the round shape of the full moon symbolizes family reunion.
Last week our students celebrated the Moon Festival in their Chinese language classes online and in the classroom. Teachers shared stories of the Harvest moon, did crafts, played games, and ate traditional Chinese mooncakes. Elementary students celebrated the Moon Festival in their online classes by listening to the legends of the Mid-autumn Festival and the moon, dressing up, and also eating moon cake at home.
